Donna joined the staff at the Center for Literacy Studies in 1998 while teaching adult education classes for Knox County Schools in a workplace setting. She received her Ed. D. degree from The University of Tennessee in 1995 in curriculum and instruction and has taught college level classes in research methods and curriculum development and program evaluation. At the Center for Literacy Studies, Donna is a program coordinator for the National Institute for Literacy Regional Resource Center 2 and she moderates the National Institute for Literacy Workforce Competitiveness Discussion List. She selected and edited lessons in the 1999 and 2000 Families First Idea Books and helps write grant proposals to fund the work of the Center. She is also involved in the research projects of the Center. Prior to the Center for Literacy Studies, Donna worked as a member of a team of consultants to the Tennessee State Department of Education on the evaluation of the functioning of the Career Ladder Program. She also worked with local school districts to strengthen their capacity to evaluate their program effectiveness using needs assessments. At home, Donna helps to raise two granddaughters and would like to do more singing, gardening, exercising, sewing, hiking, traveling, reading, and neighboring. She’s also the financial secretary for her church, a “news junkie,” and has aspirations to be more of a political activist for a large number of favorite causes.
