Reading First

Reading First, a cornerstone of the No Child Left Behind legislation, is a major federal children’s reading initiative to enable all students to become successful early readers in kindergarten through third grade.  Reading First is designed to select, implement and provide professional development for teachers using scientifically based reading programs, and to ensure accountability through ongoing, valid and reliable screening, diagnostic and classroom-based assessment. (U.S. Department of Education). The Center for Literacy Studies assists the Reading First office, Tennessee Department of Education, in data reporting, publications, and logistics for professional development events.
